IDSINGA / IDZINGA / IDZENGA / EDSINGA

"Idzenga" stems from Napoleon's decree to have registered family names. Idzenga is a distorted from the original "son or daughter of Ids"

The ancestors of this Idzenga lineage stem from Ids Pieters from Sexbierum (Barradeel), Province of Friesland, Netherlands.  The register kept by the Reformed Church of Sexbierum show that Ids Pieters and Antje Coerts had their last proclamation on 29 March 1629 when they have been officially married and baptized at Pietersbierum thus entering the Dutch Reformed Church from being former Baptists. The villages of Sexbierum and Pietersbierum are located in the Dutch province of Friesland, in Barradeel.  This is a municipality on the North sea, north of the magnificent old town of Franeker.  The Idzenga family has lived for 250 years in this rural area, initially practicing mixed farming and later as crop farmers and shopkeepers.

In 1691, Ids Pieters and his wife Sjouck Jans left Menaldum for Welsrijp. There, they lived with their children in Westerend. After the early demise of his parents Pieter Lieuwes and Antje Jans, Ids Pieters left for Tzum where his father's mother lived. There he married, he worked and he died. After his demise, the Emperor Napoleon ordered by a decree issued on 1 August 1811 (at that time Holland was temporarily ruled by France) that the inhabitants of Friesland should have a family name officially registered. On 3 January 1812, Geeltje (or Giltje)chose for herself and her four sons and two daughters the family name of Idsinga. So in this case this Frisian patronym means son or daughter of Ids.

Idsinga - Idzinga - Idzenga

In 1812, Jan Idsinga (Ids Pieters' son) was officially given the family name of Idsinga.  Because of a mistake by the registry, he got married by the name of Idzinga whereas he himself signed his marital contract as ... Idzenga!  According to a conscript's test in order to enter the army, that was found in the attachments of the marital contract, Jan had a round and blushing face, a broad forehead, blue eyes, a regular nose and mouth, a round chin and dark hair.

Upon his birth in 1821, Ids Jans Idzinga was registered by his father as Idzinga.  Hence in 1845 he married by the name in Franekeradeel but he signed the marital contract as Idzenga.  His children eventually received the family name of Idzenga. Sijbren and Trijntje with their children lived for a long time in Tzum. Shortly after the birth of their 8th child, about 1883, they left for Bergum (Tietjerksteradeel) Netherlands and three years later they showed up in Harlingen.  In November 1887 they left the province of Friesland and chose Amsterdam as their new residence.

In 1905, another error caused the name Idzinga to appear.  Ids Douwes Idzenga and Jantje Sygersma had a son, Douwe on 5 June 1905 whose name was mistakenly registered as Idzinga vice Idzenga, his siblings' name.

Another Idzinga

Brugt Idses Idzinga, the grandson of Hendrik from Schoterland, was another who used the name Idzinga. Before 1811 the family did not use a distinct family name. In 1811 everybody in the Netherlands was obliged to assume a name. However, no certificate was found in the achieves, which reported that Brugt Idses took this name. In the province of Friesland, most of these certificates can be found. On his death certificate in 1814 Brugt Idses is called Brugt Idses Idzinga. Actually Idses and Idzinga mean the same, i.e. son of Ids or descendant of Ids. The two sons of Brugt Idses Idzinga will later use different family names. Lieuwe Brugs starts using the name De Vries in 1800 when he lives in Amsterdam. This name means, From Friesland or The Frisian. From him the big De Vries family descents. The second son of Brugt Idses, Hendrik Brugts stays with his father in Oudeschoot and used the same name as on his fathers death certificate. He is the ancestor of the Idzinga, Idsinga, Idzenga and Edsinga families in Friesland and the United States. Due to many spelling errors in the civil records, different varieties of this family name appeared in the 19th century.

Just as their ancestors and family members in Amsterdam, the Idzinga family doesn`t belong to the richest in Friesland. That can be the reason that the grandson of Brugt Idses Idzinga, Hendrik Brugts Idsinga, moved to Utah (USA) in 1901. Others of these family stay close to their roots in Oudeschoot and the city of Heerenveen where many of them still live today.

In 1901 part of the Idsinga family moves to Ogden in the USA. Ogden is a town in Utah close to Salt Lake City. They were all converted to the Church of the Later Day Saints, or Mormon Church The family was never very rich and they may also have hoped for a a better live in the New World like so many others. In 1901 a big group of Dutch and Frisian moved to Ogden. Many of them were related to each other. The Idsinga family also moved with friends. Hendrik Brugt Idsinga and his second wife Iebeltje de Haan took their children (the oldest son of Hendrik remained in Friesland) and those from her first marriage. John Henry MEIBOS born. 14-2-1872 Oudeschoot, Netherlands(died 14-11-1936 Ogden, Weber, Utah, married Gertrude Hermina BEKKER (born in 17-8-1883) on 17-9-1902 in Salt Lake City, Utah)

Together with this family the group of immigrants is also joined by: The sister of Iebeltje, and her husband Kerst Jans Meibos and Hendriks' cousin Trijntje Idzinga and Johannes Wagenmakers. Many people from Friesland settled in Ogden. The Hendriks oldest son Markus stayed in Friesland, as Hendriks' brother Klaas Brugts Idzenga. In America, many of the difficult Frisian names were changed to English equivalents. The name Idsinga was spelled as Edsinga.

Klaas Brugts IDZENGA,born 16-3-1850 in Oudeschoot, died 13-4-1889. Married in Oudeschoot 9-1-1878 to Diewke Reitzes STOKER, born 19-5-1859 in Oudeschoot. His descendants use the name IDZENGA. Childern: Reitze, born 21-5-1879 Oudeschoot(Died Haskerland 03-06-1910, Not married), Nienke born 16-5-1881 Oudeschoot (Married on 07-03-1908 in Aengwirden with Johannes Withaar, Doekele born 13-8-1883 Oudeschoot (Married on 25-12-1904 in Schoterland to Janna van Wouden, Brugt born 22-10-1886 Nieuweschoot (Married on 14-05-1920 in Schoterland to Elisabeth Leiker
